How can you physically create artwork that prompts the viewer to have a calm feeling while looking at chaos? Can one feel both chaos and peace at the same time? How can we, as artists, pull that emotion out for the viewer and evoke them to experience this feeling? What should this feeling mean to Christians and how should it relate to our lives? As I begin to plan a piece that I want to construct, I ask myself these questions in order to fully draw out this moment of chaos and peace at the same time. In one of my pieces, The Foundation of Hope, I was able to make the sculpture more relatable by creating an altered view of a human form. The body is in an awkward position with an arm that represents chaos, with a base strong enough to hold the whole piece in the air. The base represents Christ and the strong foundation we have in our chaotic lives in him. This feeling should be felt in the midst of every Christian’s everyday life as we walk through our chaotic and messy lives knowing that God is in control as our strong foundation. As people view my pieces I want them to wonder what is going on, while not fully understanding what is taking place.
